Choosing the Right Tires for Your Jeep

It really is a preference on what tire you select for your Jeep.  This is dependent on the type of driving you do.  Is your Jeep a daily driver?  Is your Jeep the weekend warrior?  Do you enjoy overlanding or rock crawling?  These are a few things to think about when searching for the right tire.  Additionally, what kind or type of tire is right for you.  Are you thinking of an all-terrain tire or a mud-terrain tire?  How much load do you need the tire to manage?

Off-road tires are a category of vehicle tires that use deep tread to supply more traction on unpaved surfaces such as loose dirt, mud, sand, or gravel.  Compared to ice or snow tires, they lack studs but have deeper and wider grooves meant to help the tread sink into mud or gravel surfaces.

Depending on the design, an off-road tire may be named "all terrain" ("All-around"), meaning it is intended for use both on- and off-road.  Such tires try to compromise between grip on loose terrain and safety or comfort on paved roads.  Modern all-terrain tires typically employ hybrid tread patterns and tougher compound to increase the wear life under mixed-surface conditions.  All-terrain tires are known for their ability to handle different terrains. They come with grooves and channels that distribute the load evenly, improving the traction.  This makes all-terrain tires ideal for off-road driving, snow and ice, sand, and other soft surfaces.  They are also known for their long-lasting performance.

Mud-Terrain tires serve a very specific purpose, to perform in extreme off-road conditions. They are best suited to serious off-road driving and specific to 4WD and similar vehicles.  Built with aggressive tread patterns and much softer rubber compounds, the Mud-Terrain is designed to crawl, dig and find its way out of some very sticky situations.  Upgrading your tires should be the first modification you do to your 4WD and in the off-road world, the bigger the better.  Every year, tire manufacturers go nuts in the design room.  From aggressive tread blocks that push the limits of off-road driving with patterns, to mud ejecting sipes, super strong steel radial sidewalls, and softer compounds for a smoother ride.  All of this is done in the name of maximizing the fun you can have while staying safe off road.
